HR Branding – Observations From a Marketing Perspective

The recruitment advertising division of a Long Island advertising agency recently completed a survey of human resources managers from a Fortune 500 corporation based in New York. The sample included senior and mid-level human resources managers worldwide, and centered on determining a baseline for future development of the client’s HR brand. One of the first questions we asked in the survey was, “How knowledgeable do you feel you are with regard to the related subjects of Human Resources Branding and Employer Branding?” Surprisingly, just 13% of the respondents indicated that they were “very knowledgeable” about the subjects, and 45% expressed that they had either limited awareness or no knowledge at all. That very knowledgeable 13%, by the way, were all based outside of the United States.Considering how much has been published on the subject of HR Branding, we had anticipated much broader awareness to exist among experienced, high-level respondents. Indeed, the current literature offers many excellent articles on the value and the process of establishing an HR/Employer Brand. We wondered if, perhaps, the broad scope and technical nature of this subject matter limits its accessibility for many HR professionals-in essence relegating pertinent articles to the “I’ll read it when I have more time” category.Coming from a marketing background, I thought it might prove helpful to provide a few basic observations on the subject of HR branding…along with some practical tips and cautions…all in the interest of making the concepts more accessible and seem less theoretical. You have a brand already. A brand isn’t something you decide to get, it’s something you have whether you like it or not-literally. Internally, employees at every level have their perceptions of the HR department. Externally, potential new hires have perceptions regarding your company as a potential employer. If you fail to plan and cultivate your brand it will still continue to develop without you…and you may not be comfortable with the result.A journey starts at the beginning, not the end. It’s always tempting to decide how you want your brand to be perceived and begin trying to communicate that to internal and/or external audiences immediately. Where you really need to start is with the brand you have today. Do some research to determine how employees and managers view your department, and the image your company has among prospective new hires. This will let you know where you stand, determine how far you have to go, and let you develop a practical plan for getting there. It isn’t what you say; it’s what you do. Never confuse a slogan with a brand. A brand is a promise; a slogan is simply an expression of that promise in clear and simple terms. Borrowing an example from marketing, FedEx made itself famous as the company to trust “when it absolutely, positively has to be there.” The slogan was right on target, but only because FedEx was able to consistently deliver on the promise.A magician can never fool his tailor. The tailor always knows where the secret pockets are hidden. In some ways, HR branding can be more challenging than branding a commercial product or service, where the customer has limited opportunities for interacting with the manufacturer. Employees, however, “experience” the HR department’s ability to live up to its brand promise on a daily and intimate basis. They will see through any attempt to hide or disguise inconsistencies and failings.Your brand must be relevant. Marketing 101: your brand must relate directly to the needs of the customer. Seems obvious, but even the best companies sometimes forget this simple rule-think Edsel. In the late 1960s, Gablingers was introduced as the first light beer and branded as a “diet beer” with reduced starch. Dieting proved to be a less than relevant concern for heavy beer drinkers, however, and the product failed. Only when Miller reintroduced the product as “less filling” (i.e., you can drink more) did light beer emerge as a major beverage category. Your HR/Employer Brand must be relevant to the needs and motivations of your current and future employees. The right brand for a defense contractor would not be likely to fit well with a health care provider or the Peace Corps.Keep your brand goals practical. Since you have to “live” your brand it makes sense to set goals for your brand that you can live with. If the Discovery Channel is eyeing your industry for an episode of The World’s Dirtiest Jobs, hoping to make the Forbes’ list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For is probably a stretch. You can, however, strive to be recognized as the employer of choice in your industry or your region. Remember: no product or company ever enjoys a 100% share of a competitive market. Your brand will never be able to please everyone all of the time, but if it honestly reflects the general needs of your people and is consistently maintained, it will succeed.A strong brand will make your job easier. Yes, it takes work to develop an HR brand, but over the long haul it more than pays for itself. A brand is a promise, and a promise kept is repaid with trust. A positive HR brand helps motivate employees, makes them more open to changes in policy, strengthens the corporate culture, and improves employee-retention rates. Externally, it helps materially in attracting and hiring high-quality personnel.Avoid “managerial myopia.” In his pioneering essay Marketing Myopia, Theodore Levitt ascribed the decline of the once powerful railroad companies to a shortsighted belief that their business was running railroads. Had they understood that it was really transportation, they would have integrated trucking and airlines into their business model as these new forms of transportation emerged. The “business” of an HR department is to recruit and sustain a motivated and satisfied workforce-making HR an integral element in a company’s success. It is easy, however, to fall back into the trap of viewing the department in terms of its individual “products”-benefits packages, talent acquisition, development and training, etc. Think of these functions as building blocks, and your brand as the architectural plan. You should always be questioning whether a given decision or action supports the brand. This is also why it is important that any branding initiative receive direct attention from the levels of HR management.Moving forward with an HR branding initiative is not a small step, and one that can be expected to be met with a degree of internal “old school” resistance. Perhaps part of the problem comes from an unconscious association between “branding” and “selling”-and the implication of manipulation associated with the latter term. Selling is manipulative, a tactical tool used to achieve a desired, short-term result. Branding, on the other hand, is about establishing long-term relationships and defining what values your product, service, company…or department… represents. A successful brand is based in honesty and, as said before, makes a promise that must be kept. It is the essential step in elevating HR from a support organization to a full strategic partner in achieving a corporation’s goals.

When Should You Create Your Online Business Brand?

Should you begin your online business with a brand in mind or should you wait and then create a brand later? In this article I am going to show you the best time to create a brand for your own business. The Risk Of Creating A Brand At The StartMany marketers will suggest that if you can start your business and create a brand straight away then you are far better equipped to attract customers and develop customer loyalty. We all know that having some sort of brand or brand values does help with customer loyalty. Therefore it seems to make sense that creating your brand up front will increase your customer retention from the very start. And that is of course appealing! However, what I have found and I know I am not the only one, is that when you first build your online business things develop and change over time. For example, you may discover that you are attracting certain customers with specific needs that initially you hadn’t considered would play such a major part in your services or products.Customer Communication Develops Your BrandAs you begin to listen to your customers and you get a real glimpse of the issues and difficulties that you are being able to solve for them, then you have a fantastic opportunity to use that for your brand message.Branding must state something about your business. It must send a message to your prospects about what to expect. Therefore until you understand exactly what it is your customers value from you, then it is hit and miss as to whether you get the ideal branding specific to you.Effective Branding Happens Along The JourneyIf it takes you 6 months before you fully appreciate what your brand message is then that time is not wasted. It is better to wait and get the right message and brand that truly reflects what you and your business is about than to create one at the start and then realise later that you could have done a better job with a different slant or angle.Businesses Aren’t Instant – They GrowYour online business will grow over time. You don’t wake up one morning and everything is in place and ready to go!You can’t possibly know at the start how your business will stand out from the crowd. You should certainly have ideas and implement them but it is not until you start seeing results and getting feedback that you really know what is making the difference. Then you can use that evidence to create your brand.

Branding is Not Just Colors Nor Images

I believe in branding myself. I believe that the reason people buy a product is as a result of what they think about the product. Hence branding is all about perception. Branding is not about marketing tricks according to Tom Peters, it is about answering a few simple yet impossible questions:
1. Who are you?
2. Why are you here?
3. How are you unique?
4. How can you make a difference?
5. Who cares? (do you care?)This article is not a guide to branding it is about the heart and soul of branding.Branding is about meaning not just marketingIt is about deep organizational logic and not just fancy logos. How are you unique? you do not just want to be the best, how about being the only one who does what you do. there is power in being best but more power is in being first and only. How can you make a difference. here is how to do it.
1. Do not confuse the customer, ask yourself what is the one “great thing” about your product or service just one, not two not three when you get to three you are already confusing the customer.
2. Does the organisation CONSISTENTLY deliver that “one great thing”?
3. Confront your constomers and find out how likely they are to purchase this product or service. Finally, branding is about the slogan, it is abou the logo, the marketing campaign, the advertising and the advertising budget. But in the end branding is about CREDIBILITY. Do the 99 percent of you staff buy the act, do they live with it? After those fancy adverts and stunning logos does the brand deliver what it says it will. This is the soul of branding and the reason for the biggest brands in the world. Nike does not actually sell shoes Nike sells the EXPERIENCE of using Nikes, the feeling of being a winner!

The Myth of the Business Plan

As a business coach, I often get asked about business plans – how to do one, where to find a template, what to include, who needs one, etc. One of the biggest misconceptions about business plans is that there is just one way to create one. There isn’t just one way though – whether to do one and what to put in it are dependent on why you are doing the plan in the first place. When someone asks me about a business plan, the first question I ask is “Why are you doing a business plan?” This often brings some surprise because business plans are often included in those lists of things that every business needs so as business owners we don’t always ask the question.

There are two main audiences for your business plan – internal and external. Your internal plan might be a document which helps you make decisions and run your business. You might use casual or colorful language if it’s meaningful to you, e.g. “I want customers to feel like I always felt when I went to Mrs. Smith’s house.” Your internal plan might help employees or outsourced help you hire to feel connected to the big picture of your business and give them a backdrop against which they can make decisions. Your internal plan might help you stay on track when you look at it periodically. It might help you stay focused on why your business is important to you.

A business plan for an external audience can look very different than one for an internal audience. One of the big reasons you might need a business plan is to get funding. Your potential investor or lender will want to see that you have sound, well-researched ideas with a clear path to profit. A risk-adverse funding partner may want to see that you’ve done all you can to reduce risk of loss. A speculative investor may be looking for the potential for big returns. Even if you’ve established that you are doing a plan for the purpose of getting funding, you still need to know what’s important to the person or organization you are approaching.

I suggest that all businesses at least have an internal business plan. It’s important to get all your great ideas and guiding principles out of your head and into a document. This will help you guide your business along and move steadily forward. It doesn’t need to be formal for you own use. If you need to approach someone outside of your organization with your business plan, you’ll need to polish it up and formalize it and maybe even create a different version for different purposes. If you start with an internal document though, you’ll be helping your business and have a great foundation for the day when you need a more formal plan.

Worker Shortage Might Be Excellent News For The Economy

A worker shortage might be excellent news for the economy! Maybe, just maybe, firms will awake and see workers’ substantial contribution to their success. Some CEOs take unconscionable sums and destroy their firm’s value, unlike many frontline workers who create value. During the pandemic, CEOs took vast sums as they laid-off workers. Some firms sought bankruptcy protection, but hat didn’t stop their greedy CEOs from snatching hefty bonuses.

We have a worker shortage and firms are scrambling to hire whomever is willing. Some firms, like McDonalds have paid signing bonuses. Canada’s Loblaw and its competitors paid a bonus to frontline workers when the pandemic began. They stopped it after three months in unison with their competitors. When government confronted them about this collusion, they claimed it happened independently. Go figure! It’s like you caught your three-year-old with her hand in the cookie jar and she said, Mom, “Cookie Monster did it!”

Worker Shortage Inevitable With Shoddy Treatment

Loblaw’s behavior disturbs me. During the bonus period, profits soared. Per se, that’s no problem. I favor firms making profits. To be sure, I am against government taxing profits. But paying workers the bonus during the pandemic shouldn’t hinge on profits. It was just right. Meanwhile, my wife and I shopped at a Loblaw store and workers continued their excellent service despite Loblaw’s slight.

Leaders must realize frontline workers are the firm’s foundation and treat them well, not as cogs turning out CEOs bonuses! When employers treat workers like machines, they disengage. Gallup said, over several decades, they and other researchers found a strong link between employees’ workplace engagement and the company’s overall performance. Yet employers refuse to accept this. But there is good news: surveys show some firms break the mold and treat workers with respect: Cisco, Apple, Accenture, IBM, FedEx are a few.

Next Quarter’s Earnings Drives Businesses

Companies see next quarter as the prize, so they exploit workers and fudge next quarter’s numbers. I repeat: I am against government taxing business. However, I favor the Biden Build Back Better provision to tax share buybacks that the House passed, and it is before the Senate, even if it might have only a modest effect on share buybacks. Companies shouldn’t be spending billions buying back shares while exploiting workers.

Firms should present to shareholder meetings options to use buyback funds. Choices might include effects of paying bonuses to frontline workers with buyback funds. Shareholders should hear about potential strategic investments, too. Another option is stopping buy-backs for five years after layoffs. Executives, too, shouldn’t get bonuses within five years of layoffs. We must get rid of worker exploitation that enhances CEO bonuses.

Importance of Restaurant Marketing Agency

Restaurants need to encompass considerable marketing avenues for the sake of success. Without publicity and marketing, there are chances that the restaurant may not survive in the market. But with thorough planning and enactment, the restaurant’s promotion can grab the customer’s attention just like that.

The restaurant business is quite tough. It is difficult for the owners to flourish in this thrift and with very low profits. Restaurant owners are enthusiastic about food because not much profit is left after paying all the mandatory expenses like produce, wages, upkeep, and maintenance. Better so than eternally, restaurants publicity and marketing are necessary.

Some restaurant owners thoroughly expand their profit margin by contracting their business prototype and resemblance to others, assembling a franchise, spreading their reputation, and cultivating a future passive income. While others choose to concentrate on their flagship eatery, trusting that quality over quality is vital for drumming up future business.

Smart advertising encourages the restaurant owner to create a good reputation in the market and reach customers who might not even have heard about the restaurants near them. It also promotes the restaurants with discounts, offers, special occasions, and new items to the menu.

For marketing purposes, the best way is social media. Whether people are seeking someplace to dine in safely or looking for the best takeaway service, they turn on the social media app. The more the traffic drives to your specific website or page, the more you will succeed in this business.

What the advertising brings to the restaurants

It helps to target customers, as if the customers like the taste of the food at a specific restaurant, they will start recommending that place to their colleagues and friends. Advertising helps target particular types of customers and proves to be more effective.
Advertising certainly helps to stay competitive in the business. The competitors will be advertising their specific establishment to the customers. They will assume that the establishment has lacked publicity, is less thriving, and offers less than the other competitors.
Publicity and advertisement are thoroughly an investment. If the restaurant owner is investing wisely, they will surely profit from that. But the amount to be spent on publicity depends upon the area and type of restaurant. Usually, casual and family-specific restaurants do not spend more on advertising, while fine-dining restaurants spend more because they must create a lavish image.
Publicizing can certainly help to develop crucial aspects of the restaurant’s reputation. Advertising fetches the customers by creating the business’s reputation in the community.
Hiring a marketing agency can reduce almost all of the burden regarding advertisement. A good social media marketing agency can maintain whatsoever the name’s niche and aesthetics through social media. Great brand recognition can lead to more followers, leading to more traffic to the site and a boost in orders.
